The Real Reason Behind Successful Habits
Why some habits stick and others don't (and how you can finally change this)
Hi friend,
Whether you're trying to wake up early, take 10,000 steps, learn a new language, or quit smoking, sugar, or screen time, there’s one factor that makes or breaks your habits:
Having a compelling reason.
Willpower might get you started, but it's your more profound commitment, your clear, powerful "why" that keeps you going.
Why You Need a Strong "Why"
Charles Duhigg, in The Power of Habit, shares the story of Lisa Allen, who successfully quit smoking and dramatically changed her life after a breakup. Her compelling reason was crystal clear: she wanted control over her life again. That clarity gave her the power to rewrite her routines completely.
On the flip side, James Clear highlights in Atomic Habits that habits like exercising or journaling become easier when tied to our identity:
“I am a healthy person, so I walk daily.”
“I am a learner, so I practice a new language each day.”
Connecting your habit to your core identity or values gives you a reason that sticks beyond initial motivation.
How to Find Your Reason
Reflect deeply: Why does this habit truly matter to you?
Be specific: General goals like "being healthier" rarely stick. Instead, say, "I want energy to play with my kids every evening."
Make it personal: Tie your habit to who you want to become.
Without clarity, motivation fades. With it, habits stick.
