How to Stick to Habits When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned
Because real life rarely follows your perfect routine.

Hi friend,
You plan your day, block your calendar, maybe even write a to-do list…
But then life happens.
A surprise email, a sick child, an urgent task, a flat tire, or sometimes just low energy and foggy motivation.
No matter how carefully we plan, most of life doesn’t go according to script. One problem fades, another appears. That’s the reality. So the question is:
How do we build consistent habits in a world that’s anything but consistent?

1. “You don’t rise to the level of your goals…” (Atomic Habits)
James Clear reminds us: “You fall to the level of your systems.”
When your day derails, your systems are your safety net. Instead of relying on motivation, build habits that are frictionless and easy to restart.
For example:
Can’t do your full workout? Do 10 squats.
Can’t journal a full page? Write one sentence.
Can’t meditate for 10 minutes? Take 3 deep breaths.
Micro-habits are how we stay on track, even on bad days.
2. “Begin with the end in mind.” (7 Habits of Highly Effective People)
Stephen Covey emphasizes staying grounded in your principles and values, not just your plans.
Planning matters. But life demands adaptability.
The key? Don’t give up the mission just because the method changes.
When your day unravels, remind yourself: What kind of person am I trying to become?
Then do the smallest next step in alignment with that.
3. “Flexibility is a feature, not a failure.” (Good Habits, Bad Habits)
Wendy Wood’s research shows that flexibility is essential to habit persistence. Rigid routines break easily under stress. Flexible habits bend and adapt.
Your habit doesn’t need to happen at the same time, in the same place, in the same way every day.
It just needs to happen in some form, as often as possible.
Consistency doesn’t mean perfection.
It means showing up, even if the conditions aren’t ideal.
It means making room for life’s chaos, while still protecting the core routines that ground you.
