Why You Should Do Important Habits in the Morning
đź’ˇ Because by evening, your energy (and willpower) is already spent.
Hi friend,
Ever notice how you’re more likely to skip the gym, binge on snacks, or scroll mindlessly at /night?
It’s not a coincidence.
By evening, your decision-making fuel is running low, what psychologists call decision fatigue. As you go through the day, every choice (big or small) depletes your mental resources.
In Good Habits, Bad Habits, Wendy Wood explains that willpower is a finite resource. When it’s drained, you’re more likely to fall back on old habits, especially the unhelpful ones.
In Atomic Habits, James Clear advises “stacking the deck in your favor”, doing the most important habits early in the day while your energy and focus are high.
And Charles Duhigg in The Power of Habit reminds us that habits are more likely to stick when they’re anchored to predictable routines, like a simple morning ritual.
Here’s how I’ve built around this idea:
âś… Morning journaling; before the chaos of the day begins.
✅ Exercise before noon; because I’ll “never feel like it” after dinner.
âś… Priority work first; writing, not inbox, comes first.
It’s not just about discipline. It’s about strategy. Build habits where your energy is strongest.
When do you feel most energized for your habits: morning, afternoon, or night?
Let me know, I’d love to hear what’s working for you.
