How I Sustained My 10,000 Steps-a-Day Habit (And How You Can Too)

Walking daily transformed my physical and mental health. Here’s how I did it.

Hi friend,

Last year, I made a decision:

Walk at least 10,000 steps every day.

Today, I checked my tracker and realized I’ve kept this habit for 12 consecutive months, even hitting an average of 15,000 steps some months.

Stats from my Apple Health Steps records

But it’s not just about numbers.

Here’s what daily walking gave me:

  • 🌱 Clearer Mind: Improved focus, mental clarity, and reduced stress.

  • 💪 Better Health: Increased stamina, better cardiovascular fitness, and stronger immunity.

  • 😊 Boosted Mood: Consistent walking keeps me calmer, happier, and more energized.

But how do you build and sustain such a habit?

Here’s my practical guide:

🎯 Define a Meaningful Goal

  • Not too easy (5,000 steps might not stretch you)

  • Not too ambitious (25,000 steps daily isn’t sustainable every single day)

  • Choose a goal challenging enough to keep you motivated but achievable even on low-energy days.

📱 Use Tracking Systems to Stay Consistent

  • Use your smartphone or smartwatch for tracking steps.

  • Download specialized apps like Strava or StepsApp; these provide visual progress, motivational nudges, and reminders.

🤝 Create Public Accountability

  • Commit publicly or find an accountability partner.

  • Share your progress regularly (weekly or monthly) on social media or in a supportive community.

  • Celebrate milestones publicly each victory motivates the next.

📚 Insights from my favorite habit books:

  • Atomic Habits (James Clear): “Make habits obvious, attractive, easy, and satisfying.” My tracking apps made daily walking attractive and satisfying.

  • Tiny Habits (BJ Fogg): “Anchor your new habit to something you already do.” After dinner, I automatically lace up my shoes and walk.

  • The Power of Habit (Charles Duhigg): “Every habit loop includes cue, routine, reward.” My cue: putting on my headphones. My reward: the endorphin rush and seeing my steps grow.

The results are not just physical; they’re mental and emotional.

Every step matters. Every day counts.
